Targeted at young academics in general and alumni of the EurOMA Doctoral Seminar in particular, the EurOMA Young Scholars Workshop is conceived as a way to support the career development of young scholars in the field of operations management (OM) by teaching and sharing with them major skills needed in an academic career.
Important skills are related to:
- Supervising MSc and PhD students.
- Teaching OM to MSc and MBA students.
- Designing and developing research projects in OM
- Developing your career – managing your way through academia.
- Developing theoretically rigorous and managerially relevant OM research.
Each year one of the above subjects is developed on a rolling base. At the same time, the initiative is aimed at developing the community of young OM scholars, keeping the network alive and providing opportunities to meet and discuss relevant topics.
Theme
The theme and program of the 2018 workshop is “Operations management – research and practice”.
Operations management as a scientific discipline has always struggled with the practical relevance and impact of its research. At the same time, there is no doubt that OM concepts, systems and practices have huge impact on the performance of production companies, service providers and public organizations. However, how good are these concepts, systems and practices and/or their implementation actually? To what extent is the practical impact of OM a reflection of robust theory development or is there still a lot of scope for improvement? How useful and usable are the results of single or multiple cases studies and collaborative research projects beyond the boundaries of the firm(s) involved, and what can be done to increase their generalizability? How useful and usable are the results of survey-based quantitative studies?
Addressing these and similar questions, the workshop features presentations from OM scholars and practitioners who have been involved in OM research and will share their experience, views and ideas on questions and topics such as:
- How to increase the usefulness and usability of OM research?
- Designing, conducting and publishing collaborative research.
- Taking theory to practice – taking practice to research.
Of course there will be ample opportunities for networking, one of the key overall objectives of the Young Scholars Workshops.
Target group and eligibility
The target group of the workshop is young OM academics who aim at a continued academic career. Priority is given to EurOMA Doctoral Seminar alumni. The 2018 workshop is open to EurOMA members participating in the 2018 annual conference, who have presented their PhD thesis in or after 2013.
The number of participants is limited to 30 people, who have registered for the conference.

Jan Godsell is a Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Strategy at WMG, University of Warwick. Her work focuses on developing sustainable business models through the alignment of product, marketing and supply chain strategy. Jan’s work considers the way that supply chain strategy needs to adapt to support the differing business priorities at different stages in the product lifecycle. She leads the Supply Chain Research Group and the Supply Chains in Practice (SCIP) industrial collaborator forum. As a chartered engineer, Jan has more than two decades of combined industry experience in product development, innovation, supply chain strategy, and process improvement working for ICI, Astra Zeneca and Dyson. She has advised government and industry on supply chain strategy and its relationship to industrial and business strategy. She has served on numerous advisory boards, and is currently a member of the EurOMA board and the UK SMART Specialization Advisory Board. Jan is on the editorial board of three major operations and supply chain journals.
Paul Coughlan is Professor in Operations Management and Director of Accreditation & Quality Assurance at the Trinity Business School, Trinity College Dublin. His research in product development and continuous improvement has encompassed an innovative action research dimension involving networks of companies engaged in action learning. His current funded research is in collaboration with engineering and environmental scientists and is exploring the utilization of integrated, smart and low-carbon energy in the distribution of water resources. He is engaged in continuing methodology development and specialized doctoral training in action research and learning through the EIASM doctoral network.
Federico Caniato is Professor of Supply Chain and Purchasing Management at the School of Management of Politecnico di Milano. He earned an MSc and a PhD in Management Engineering from Politecnico di Milano. He is director of the Master in Supply Chain and Purchasing Management of MIP Politecnico di Milano Graduate School of Business, and director of the Supply Chain Finance Observatory, the leading research initiative in Italy on the topic, in close collaboration with the international Supply Chain Finance Community. He authored several international publications on various Operations Management journals, and is Associate Editor of the Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. Federico’s research focuses particularly on supply chain finance and sustainability.
Harry Boer is Professor of Strategy and Organization at the Center for Industrial Production at Aalborg University, and Honorary Professor at Corvinus University of Budapest, Hungary. He holds a BSc in Applied Mathematics and an MSc and PhD both in Management Engineering. Harry has (co-)authored numerous articles and several books on subjects such as organization design, flexible automation, manufacturing strategy, and continuous improvement. His current research interest concerns the organizational aspects of continuous innovation – studied as the effective integration of corporate strategy, day-to-day operations, incremental improvement and radical innovation.

Young scholars who participated in the 2017 workshop will receive an invitation and have to confirm their participation in the 2018 workshop by sending an e-mail to hboer@business.aau.dk before April 23, 2018.

Notifications of acceptance will be sent out not later than April 30, 2018.
